A Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is a procedure used to treat chronic pain in the head, neck, upper arm, and upper chest. This block involves injecting a local anesthetic around the stellate ganglion, a collection of nerves located in the neck that is responsible for regulating nerve signals to these areas. The SGB is often used for conditions like complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), facial pain, or post-surgical pain.
Stellate Ganglion Block can be utilized as a treatment for:
-Neck Pain
-Arm Pain
-Chest Pain
This injection treats the pain of an inflamed nerve in your cervical spine. It relieves nerve swelling. If you have a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or some other problem that's pressing on a nerve, it may help you.
The patient is positioned on their back, and after numbing the area with a local anesthetic, a needle is guided to the stellate ganglion using fluoroscopic imaging or ultrasound. Once the needle is properly placed, the anesthetic is injected, blocking pain signals from the affected nerves.
Recovery and post-treatment care
After the procedure, patients are monitored for a short period before going home. Pain relief may be immediate, but multiple injections may be needed to maintain long-term relief. The procedure is well-tolerated, with most patients resuming normal activities within 24 hours.
