Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to treat vertebral compression fractures commonly caused by osteoporosis, spinal tumors, or trauma. These fractures can cause severe back pain, reduced mobility, and even spinal deformities like kyphosis (a forward-curved spine). Kyphoplasty works by stabilizing the fractured vertebra and restoring the normal height of the collapsed bone, which helps relieve pain and prevent further complications.
Kyphoplasty can be utilized as a treatment for:
-Fixing Fractures
This minimally-invasive procedure repairs a vertebral compression fracture. It helps restore the spine's natural shape. Some patients experience rapid pain relief after the procedure.
Kyphoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia, and it typically takes about an hour per vertebra. The patient is positioned on their stomach, and the doctor uses fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to place a small needle into the fractured vertebra through a tiny incision in the back. A balloon is then inserted through the needle and carefully inflated to restore the vertebral height. Once the height is corrected, the balloon is deflated and removed, and the space is filled with bone cement to stabilize the vertebra.
The cement hardens quickly, providing immediate stabilization. Patients often experience rapid pain relief and improved mobility, sometimes within hours of the procedure.
Recovery and post-treatment care
After the procedure, patients are typically observed for a short period before being discharged on the same day or after a brief hospital stay. Most patients experience significant pain relief and can return to their normal activities within a few days, though strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks. Light physical therapy may be recommended to help strengthen the back and improve mobility.
Benefits of Kyphoplasty
Immediate pain relief: Many patients experience significant pain reduction shortly after the procedure.
Minimally invasive: Kyphoplasty involves small incisions, leading to minimal recovery time and less postoperative discomfort.
Restores spinal alignment: By correcting vertebral height, Kyphoplasty can prevent further spinal deformity and improve posture.
Quick recovery: Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days.
