Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection (CESI) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to treat chronic pain in the neck and arms caused by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or nerve root irritation. The injection delivers a combination of corticosteroids and local anesthetic into the epidural space of the cervical spine. This helps reduce inflammation around the affected nerves, providing significant pain relief.
Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection can be utilized as a treatment for:
-Neck Pain
-Arm Pain
This injection treats the pain of an inflamed nerve in your cervical spine. It relieves nerve swelling. If you have a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or some other problem that's pressing on a nerve, it may help you.
What to expect during the procedure?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with the patient lying face down. Using fluoroscopy (live X-ray) for guidance, the physician inserts a thin needle into the epidural space. The steroid medication reduces inflammation, while the local anesthetic provides temporary pain relief. The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes, and most patients can return home the same day.
Recovery and post-treatment care
Patients may feel relief within a few days, but full effects may take up to a week. Some patients require a series of injections to achieve long-term pain relief, which can last from weeks to several months.
