Intracept® Procedure
The Intracept® procedure is a non-invasive, outpatient treatment specifically designed to relieve chronic vertebrogenic pain in the lower back. This innovative approach targets the basivertebral nerve (BVN) to provide effective, long-lasting relief without the need for surgery.
The Intracept® Procedure
The basivertebral nerve (BVN) enters the vertebrae at the back and branches out to the endplates. When the endplates are damaged, these nerve endings send pain signals to the brain through the BVN.
The Intracept® procedure is a minimally invasive treatment designed to relieve vertebrogenic low back pain that originates from the basivertebral nerve. Using a specialized probe, which is inserted into the vertebrae through a tool called an introducer, radiofrequency energy is applied to heat the BVN, preventing it from transmitting pain signals to the brain.
What to Expect During the Intracept® Procedure
Before the procedure begins, you will receive IV sedation to help you relax. A nurse will take you into the procedure room, where you'll be positioned on your stomach on a special table. The area on your lower back where the procedure will take place will be thoroughly cleaned, and a local anesthetic will be applied to numb the skin.
Once the area is numb, the physician will make a small incision in your lower back. Using a fluoroscope, a specialized X-ray machine, the physician will guide an introducer to the precise location for the procedure. A tube-like instrument is inserted through the introducer to create a pathway. The probe is then passed through this channel and placed next to the basivertebral nerve.
Radiofrequency energy is sent through the probe, heating the basivertebral nerve. This heat disrupts the pain signals that are transmitted to the brain, providing relief from vertebrogenic pain.
After the procedure, the probe and introducer are carefully removed, and the incision is cleaned, stitched, and covered with a sterile bandage.
